“I use paintings to reconstruct what I have experienced
and felt. In this my mind get focused on the social disparities.
For some years my artwork was centered on the gypsy communities
in Sri Lanka. Today, as an artist I try to capture and express
the agonies and ecstasies of being a woman in a society, which
has complex and contradicting opinions. In my work, one could
see the human form and colour patches juxtaposed. I try to retain
the power of the colours as much as possible. Because of this,
one could see very bright and very dark colours depicted with
the same intensity. I also try to highlight the meaning of the
paintings through putting emphasis on the colours. Sometimes my
artwork tries to construct a social expression and at other times
it merely becomes an isolated exchange that happens between the
canvas and myself”- Amitha Indirani
