Art Today, Christine Ruth

Christine Ruth was born in 1972 in Colombo. She had her initial education at the Vishaka Girls High School in Wellawatte. Her interest in art was first kindled by an exhibition she attended of the artist Chandraguptha Thenuwara in 1995. This visual experience made her enroll herself at the Vibhavi Academy of Fine Arts in 1996. She underwent training in drawing and painting at the same institution.

Her work explores the ideas of sexuality and man. She tries to interrogate and critique the idea of man’s control of the woman’s sexuality. She tries to look at the reverse situation where ‘control and domination’ that could have on the male by woman’s agency sustained through manipulation of her sexuality. Her work is mainly on oil and acrylic on canvas.

She has had many group exhibitions with other artists. She took part regularly in the Annual VAFA Exhibitions at the VAFA gallery held in 1997, 1998 and 1999. She was also invited to participate in the Women’s Art Exhibition held to commemorate the International Women’s day in 1999 at the VAFA Gallery.
