The Lionel Wendt Art Centre was established as a trust and a non profit making organization 50 years ago by an act of Parliament in memory of Lionel Wendt, a photographic artist who was active in the 19 40s.

The Lionel Wendt Art Centre consists of two gallery spaces for exhibitions and a fully equipped theatre hall. The galleries are available to artists for rent and it has been a popular exhibition hall among artists, especially for mid-career artists. The theatre hall functions as one of the main venues for theatre and musical programs.

The Lionel Wendt Art Centre has been the main venue for art exhibitions and theatre (especially English theatre) and for other performing art events for a long time. In addition, the ground floor exhibition hall is given for exhibitions of craft, handloom, furniture etc. Large musical theatre productions are usually held at the Lionel Wendt theatre because of its better facilities.
