Art Today, Yamuna Kumari Munasinghe

Yamuna Kumari Munasinghe was born in Godakawela in 1974. From a very young age, she has been taking a keen interest in drawing and painting. At the age of thirteen, she took part in the All Island Children’s Art Competition and exhibition held at the National Art Gallery where she won an award. She also won a copper medal at the 17th International Children’s Art Exhibition held in 1987. Having encouragement from such achievements, her childhood interest developed into a more serious preoccupation. She joined Vibhavi Academy of Fine Arts (VAFA) in 1996 for a certificate course in painting where she studied for three years and graduated in 1999.

She had her first solo exhibition in 1999 at the Vibhavi Academy of Fine Arts gallery. She has also exhibited her work in a number of group exhibitions. In 1997, 1998 and 1999 she took part in the annual exhibitions of VAFA students and faculty. She was invited to participate in the Women Artists’ Exhibition commemorating the international women’s day in 1998 held at the National Art Gallery. Her work was included in the Women Artists Exhibition held at the VAFA Gallery in 1999. Yamuna Kumari Munasinghe was also invited to participate in the Third International Artists’ Camp held at Hikkaduwa, and the subsequent exhibition at the National Art Gallery Colombo, in 1999.

At present she is continuing her art education in New Delhi, India.
